New Zealand-born, London-based drummer and beat maker Myele Manzana’s latest album, Crisis & Opportunity Vol. 1, is an iconoclastic, genre-blending excursion. While the album is firmly rooted in jazz, it also dabbles into electronic as well, courtesy of the synthesizer skills of guest Mark de Clive-Lowe. The whole album is fantastic, but “Brixton Blues” is a real standout, a straight-ahead jazz number accentuated by Manzana’s virtuoso drumming and the piano melodies of Ashley Henry.
