Guess What

Children In Space

Guess What is a duo from France, comprised of Graham Mushnik (Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek) on keys and Luke Warmcop (Phat Dat) on drums. Although I’m hearing of them, they’ve apparently been around for nearly 15 years and have a penchant for albums that examine space exploration, all embodying a sound that’s much bigger and more grandiose than the sum of their parts.

With their fourth album, Children In Space, Guess What continue their space odyssey, this time delving into a fictional (?) dystopian future where humans abandon earth and live in space. It’s a synth- and groove-heavy interstellar trip down the rabbit hole of all things cosmic and also the first Guess What album to include vocals. Throughout nine exceedingly fun tracks, the band dives into a myriad of genres – library music (“Spaceship Visit For Under 3’s”), soul/nu jazz (“Counting Comets”), space disco (“Lessons In Space”), balearic (“Meetings With Extra-Terrestrial Men”), and even a bit of g-funk (“Christa’s Last Lesson”). Excellent stuff.
