Originally released in 1974, Le Sato by Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou Dahomey recently got the reissue treatment by the ever-stellar Acid Jazz Records. Sato is music that accompanies vodun (voodoo) rituals in the band’s home country of Benin. The sacred, trance-inducing polyrhythms of sato are said to evoke spirits of the dead. In Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou Dahomey’s hands, the music is akin to the psych sounds of zamrock bands like Ngozi Family and Witch. Le Sato is an excellent EP in its own right, and the sparse standout track “My Love” is a particularly gorgeous piece.
