Detroit spitter and beatmaker NOLAN released his first album in 2014. Along the way he’s showed us a range of production styles and flows, mostly in the boom bap / battle rap vein. Which was all fine and good. But with his latest EP, P.S., he’s crafted something truly special, a fully realized project that puts him in modern rap’s upper echelon. First and foremost, P.S. showcases NOLAN’s ability to craft songs that knock. Beats run the gamut from dusty soul-, jazz- , and blues-inflected loops (take “blues,” for example) to future funk rollers (“carte blanche”), while NOLAN keeps it 100 with each verse of his sharp-tongued, quick-witted flow. It’s top notch material from an artist I can’t wait to hear more from.
