Rappers Pink Siifu & Fly Anakin follow up their excellent FlySiifu’s album with $mokebreak, another exquisite EP of textured beats and rhymes. If you’ve listened to these guys before then you know what to expect. If you haven’t heard them, the cover photo gives an idea of what’s in store as this EP builds on their signature crate digging sound, using vintage samples and laid back raps to push the classic hip-hop aesthetic in a new direction. Case in point – “3 Dope Boys,” which showcases Siifu, Anakin and guest rapper 3WaySlim’s idiosyncratic flows over a drum-less, soulful vocal loop from beatmaker Budgie. The rest of the EP moves in a similar vibe, all dusty beats and experimental flows.
Despite containing a variety of producers (including the always great Ohbliv, Ewonee and Black Noi$e), the whole EP has a distinctive, cohesive style and flow to it. You can tell these guys have a real vision for their music and have built up a team of like minded rappers and beatmakers to help execute it.
