Dutch psychedelic soul producer Joshua Boon and Manchester-based singer Tim Condor have combined their powers to create an enchanting new music project. As The Forces, the duo are grounded in the ideals of 1960s psychedelia, combining the musical aesthetic of that era with modern hip-hop production techniques to create a sonic experience as powerful and arresting as its influences.
“I’ve always wanted to make something Beatles-esque,” says Boon to introduce The Forces. “To me, their open outlook on all kinds of music, instruments, and experiments with song structures is in line with the open-minded crate-digging attitude of hip-hop producers like Madlib or Q-Tip.”
Today we’re premiering the music video for “Free,” the third single from The Forces forthcoming debut EP. The playfully raw, DIY visuals were made in collaboration with a professional puppeteer and the song itself features hints of space rock vibes akin to Spiritualized and Spacemen 3. A mix of flowing psych pop and hazy hip-hop, “Free” features airy vocals and meditative synths that build to a swirling vortex, dragging you into a psychedelic crescendo complete with trumpets and a gospel choir. Epic stuff. Check it out below.
The Forces self-titled debut EP releases this Friday, September 9 on Rucksack Records. Preview/pre-order the album today on Bandcamp.
