New Jersey-based producer ILL Tal drops a gem of an album with Aphelion. While the album is rooted in the rap production tradition, this isn’t your typical boom bap affair. Aphelion showcases ILL Tal’s musical dexterity, as he plays keys, synthesizers, guitar, bass, trumpet and electric violin to bring his vision to life. This incorporation of live instruments sets this apart from your typical beat tape, as ILL Tal pulls from a bevy of influences – from jazz fusion to prog rock, soul and funk – to craft head-nodding, cinematic instrumentals. Excellent stuff.
