North Carolina-based producer Khrysis drops a gem with his latest instrumental album, Khrysis On The Boards V.2. If you’ve never heard of Khrysis before, you’re not alone (I hadn’t before listening to this one). But he comes with a long and impressive track record, including a grammy nomination, production work for Sean Price, Jean Grae and Masta Ace, and being one of the in-house producers of the Justus League collective, alongside 9th Wonder.
That said, although he’s been doing his thing for a while, On The Boards V.2 provided me with quite the introduction to his chops as a producer. The beats are sample heavy and lush, headnodic productions that stand on their own. The diversity and sonic range exhibited also impresses, as Khrysis drops a multitude of styles all rooted in the boom bap tradition. This is an incredibly well-rounded affair that definitely merits repeat listening.
