Blending the vibrant, genre-bending spirit of artists like Thundercat and Kamasi Washington with the intricate arrangements and deep, hard-edged tones of their Chicago jazz roots, Resavoir bring an expansive, soulful debut album to life. Led by trumpeter Will Miller, who’s shared the stage with artists like A$AP Rocky and Lil Wayne, Resavoir consists of 18 musicians and each song on their self-titled debut showcases a dizzying mix of genres, voices and sounds.
While the album is reminiscent of sounds heard from other Chicago jazz-inflected groups, it also has an edge and modernity throughout. The group manages to bring together a variety of musical influences and nudges them in the direction those sounds are trending towards today. Employing updated jazz harmonies to similar effect to contemporaries like The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, the band also let hip-hop production conventions reign. The record is cohesive and memorable while also adventurous; it’s tough to say whether Miller and his bandmates take more of a cue from jazz, indie rock or rap, but Resavoir certainly draws on the spirit of all three.
